Ms Fox... you've got them mixed up...

"He was a very valiant man who first adventured on eating of oysters."

~ James I (Thomas Fuller's "Worthies of England")

"He was a bold man that first eat an oyster."

~ Jonathan Swift, listed as a cliché in "Polite Conversation"

"Poor Britons, there is some good in them after all -- they produced an oyster."

Roman historian, when the Roman invaders discovered the natural oyster beds in East Anglia. (*)

(*) East Anglia... I spent about a 1.5 years there... based in Norwich (near the east coast in England...) before moving on to London. The beaches were sandy allright (about 1 hour or so away)... but cold as hell and the wind... ever present, and ever cold, most of the time... well... wet. [but I had a lot of fun, while there]
