cites concern about the unpredictability of corporate earnings

Or lack thereof.

The stock market bubble popping took people from being on paper millionaires to not being. Probably didn't have a huge effect other then psychological on their lives. A housing market bubble burst will devastate people and their finances for years to come. When people start giving their house's to the bank because they can't make the payments and can't sell them for anywhere near what they owe on them we will see some true ugliness IMO. Witnessed the bursting of the farm bubble back in the late 70's and early 80's. It wasn't pretty and I am not sure that rural areas have ever recovered.

Edit: It's kind of amusing how CNBC or bull tv keeps showing the asian markets green like it is new or updating information.
