If a thread is large enough, someone can come to the plate with experience :-)

I was on a 757 that had an engine 'blown up' on take off out of Dallas a couple of years back. We had 2 explosions, turned over on our side and then dove at a sharp angle as the pilot righted the aircraft and re-deployed the landing gear. We made a sharp 180 and dropped back on the runway for the 'hardest' landing I have had the pleasure to make (although we were all extremely grateful for it).

Our 'missle' - a large hawk pulled in the port side nacelle. It destroyed the engine and overbalanced the power.

The pilot (in a bar afterwards :-) told a group of us that this was practiced in simulators a lot - but was his first experience in a 'real' situation since his Air Force days.

Needless to say - he (and the other crew) didn't pick up the tab.

So my point is - yes an engine can be lost in the 1st 5k feet of altitude and recovered. In reacting to such an emergency the pilots wouldn't even know it was a missle - they would be reacting to the events not unlike my experience.
