Zonder, For friday them.
I have learned to learn from everyone I talk to or chat with. I know when i dont get my point across as well as I would like i become agitated especially since 9/11. I try hard to get that under control. I am a US baby boomer and was brought up as a liberal. Most of my liberal values remain intact, although i now consider myself a neo-conservative as pertains to economics and foreign policy.
I am not really comfortable in appearing to be in the war monger cagegory those on the left would pigeon hole me in. I am a University of Chicago foreign policy guy with a Masters. I learned about national interest early on. I try to blend morality into those interests unlike most of the balance of power guys.
However with Iraq and the middle east I find myself with no other choice than to play hardball. Even if you are right about the reasons, the outcome of this world crisis occupies my thoughts more. Yes the US screws up(and will continue to) but no more than the rest imo. We should correct the screw ups going forward.
Bush is my type of guy either but i totally believe that what is propelling him is the best interests of the US. That may include oil but is not consumed by it. He was deeply and permanently affected what he saw on 9/11.
Also as Fred so eloquently points out, terror against civilians is more vile than anything else and the countries now defending themselves--US, israel, india, indonesia, phillipines must do all they can even on the edges of civil liberties and rights to defeat these bad guys.
And then to saddam. I do believe he will be the threat that we fear in less than 5 years. I do believe that his sons will carry on if he dies. I think he must be stopped now or else thousands of terrorists in alliance with him for a variety of reasons will threaten civilization as we know it. And there will be no peace in the US or in Monaco.
I want to accomplish this with UN backing and other nations support. I think you will be surprised that the support will be there when push comes to shove. I hope then that you will support the UN and not claim the UN is a puppet of US policy. I hope then that you will say the Saudis did the right thing by allowing us the use of bases. And so on.
My gut tells me many on the left will switch from using the UN as cover for anti-US feelings and make the above claims. I hope you will remain intellectually honest and dispute them.
Mike
