Hi CobaltBlue; I'm guessing you overlooked my comments on your client with the chip on his shoulder, so I'm repeating my questions re: "Nor did the other man, who called law enforcement to register a complaint. Of course, there was nothing they could do, because the threat was veiled. That's the beauty of veiled threats. Typically, they aren't actionable. Nevertheless, they are real."

Let's cut to the chase. Did your client use his gun to shoot the lover?

For that matter, did your client even own a 9mm handgun? And could he have made the veiled threat without owning the gun? And wouldn't the empty threat have provided all the effect that he wanted?

P.S. I think the answer to my question cuts to the center of the question of how we differently interpret Iraq's actions. You say that "inference" allows you to logically conclude that Iraq has weapons of mass destruction and is willing to use them. But by your own logic, your client must therefore actually own a pistol and be willing to use it. These all may be true, but the real question is this. Will Iraq use its WMDs? The best way of looking for evidence of this from your case is to answer the question: "Did your client shoot the lover?"

It's my experience that far more veiled threats are made than murders take place. Maybe you live in a world where people are nice and don't make veiled threats. I grew up in a different neighborhood, so I probably have better statistics than you on the ratio of trash talking to murder.
