Hi whitepine,
Pricewise no doubt but it's dividend payout is just not stable by comparison. Also bearing in mind that my ACB (not including dividends) is still well below the current AVNFF price despite my recent too early addition in the 12.60 range (CDN of course). To me SJT is more like playing a regular E&P although I imagine the tax ramifications are different. I understand your capital preservation concerns but if the debt, cashflow, reserve life, hedging (some goldbug I am eh!) and management are sound I don't worry too much. (I diversify of course because none of these things are guaranteed.) This is one place where I don't mind doing the buy and hold thing since I'm being paid to do so. You are correct also that the best time to buy is always at the cycle lows and the only time IMO if you intend to swing trade them. Look @ the recent silliness in AVN.UN to 13.75 and where it is now, not for the faint of heart or those with a high priority for capital preservation.

Like I posted on the other board I'd buy NCN for trading but not to hold during the down times 'cause they don't hedge as much (nil I think for 2003 so far).

The other point for me with the trusts is that I haven't just started buying in light of what I see as bullish stirrings in NG. I've had AVN for example since its inception. All the trusts I own (non energy also but no REITS) are part of a LT income plan. I don't plan on waiting 20 years (46 now) to start looking for income :o)

On SJT I've never played it. Do the US trusts acquire new reserves ? If not are you not taking a bigger depletion risk ?

regards
Kastel
