For the most part doctors can not form a union in this country because most are independent contractors or partnerships rather than employees. They can form associations but that association can't bargain collectively for a higher income. If a group of business owners get together to set prices it's called price fixing.

Our doctors endure years of slave wages before they get the big bucks. The average resident makes around 26-30k and carries about 100k in educational loans. When you factor in the education cost and opportunity cost they need to make big salaries for many years just to get even with a blue collar high school educated union worker of the same age.
