My guess is that they honor them with more restrictions than before and raise the requirements for future redemptions. Otherwise they lose what's left of their passenger base. And they do have some spare empty seats.

Being near DFW, I've had little experience with UAL. Just one flight from Tokyo to Kuala Lumpur around the edge of a typhoon with the 747's wings flapping like a bird's. But what I remember most about that flight was how filthy the plane was. Like they hadn't cleaned the carpet since 1988.
