When you factor in the education cost and opportunity cost they need to make big salaries for many years just to get even with a blue collar high school educated union worker of the same age.

i agree w/your point about needing to "make up for lost time". here is a site that shows some figures from 1998.

these salaries are not as high as i would have expected. maybe they have gone up since then. gastroenterologists, pulmonologists, nephrologists, dermatologists, etc. all making less than 200K.
