inconsistent moral outrage = hypocrisy. I can understand, and appreciate, a cynical realist or a utilitarian cutting both Bill Clinton and Henry Kissinger some slack, disregarding their moral failings and focusing on their (many) practical accomplishments. And I can understand, and appreciate, a moralist scorching both of them as scum. What I dislike is the holding of one's political allies to one set of standards and one's political enemies to another--something that is all too common, of course, across the spectrum...

PS to make my position perfectly clear, I think that the particular individuals involved in the more unconscionable aspects of the Iran-contra affair shouldn't be entrusted with government power once again, because they showed themselves personally unworthy of it. That has nothing to do with their general political views, nor even their specific views on, say, whether we should support the contras. I would like to think that I would be consistent in such a position in the cases of people with different views should they have committed comparable offenses.
