This is simple courtesy.

I have only fasted for a few days in all my life and that was to try it out as a diet (didn't work, as I stuffed myself at night before going to bed <ggg>) but when I was living in the ME, I took care not to eat or drink in front of people I knew were fasting.

This is simple manners and courtesy. It has nothing to do with non-Muslims following Ramadan rules. You just don't eat in front of them and make them smell the pizza you are gulping down. You eat at home. I don't see anything wrong with that.
