The Elon article acidly describes the policies of the previous administrations who bequeathed them such a mess. History will not treat them kindly.

Nice point, tek. One of the more telling points I thought Elon made was the degree to which Israeli policy concerning the West Bank and Gaza is determined by the settlers. I was not aware they had quite so strong a hold.

I continue to think the Algerian metaphor looks ever more accurate. And I find that about as depressing as it gets. The only way out that comes readily to mind is for the US to take a more even handed approach. But that is completely unlikely, given the present domestic political positioning of the Bush administration.

Someone posted something here to the effect that the only future they saw started when both sides were completely worn out. That may well be true but it represents a future that still could be avoided.
