300?! There's only WDC, MXO, SEG (or whatever it will be called), IBM/Hitachi (whenever that sale closes) & Samsung on the desktop. I don't know of anyone else who makes them, certainly not in any quantity. Add Toshiba for laptop drives (but subtract WDC and MXO; I don't know if SEG makes laptop drives yet or not--they were planning to when they went private). I don't think MKE makes drives anymore, don't know what they do with their old factories.

WDC makes some money. SEG made good money last Q in prep for returning to public hands. MXO still in the red, I'm not sure why, Cannon has work to do--they've ditched MKE, for some reason they haven't been able to cut enough costs from HDD to get profitable. Maybe Stitch will magically appear from who knows where and tell us.

Also, some have speculated that IBM has some hot new invention that will replace disk drives over the next decade, hence the sale of their drive division to Hitachi. I have no idea if there is any truth to that or not.
