He likely didn't think it was life because viruses don't really self-replicate. They simply take over the self-replicating "machinery" of truly living organisms to reproduce. But still, it is a fascinating piece of work, as you say. I don't, however, think this work or any like it is highly relevant to evolution. If man should create life, such a thing would actually support intelligent design and not Darwinism.
