Well, Michael, I understand that you object to the way some of your tax dollars are spent, but that isn't really a logical rationalization for justifying the mortgage interest deduction. It definitely is welfare--middle class welfare--a total gift from our government, money which you did not earn. Renters pay their landlords' mortgage payments AND their property taxes from their rent, and I'm sure they are just as unhappy with where their tax money goes as you are. AND they get no gift from the government at all.

This is not a huge deal--I just wanted to point out that most tax codes are written to give some kind of welfare to different groups, and in this case homeowners get one. I think if we are going to talk about welfare--something for nothing, given to a certain group of people, paid for by everyone's taxes--we just ought to realize that the middle and upper classes get a lot more FREE goodies than the poor.

I WOULD like to talk about tax reform. I know a little about the Chilean system, but would like to learn more. Do you have some information you would like to share?? I have heard that there are some really good things about it.
