>>>But it is difficult to evaluate what good the New Deal did for the economy overall.<<<

We can say that Mr. Roosevelt took action immediately after taking his oath. These actions are described in his book "On Our Way," which was published in 1934. After Mr. Roosevelt took office, the incredible decline stopped and growth in the GDP was restored. By 1934, the economy was in recovery--tenuous--but recovery none the less. World War II changed things drastically and prevents us from evaluating the effects of Mr. Roosevelt's actions in isolation.

Perhaps we should just thank the generation that preceded us for their dedication to this country throughout World War II and for being the ultimate cause for economic recovery.

>>>Surely he presented a relatively moderate alternative to demogogues like Father Coughlin, and helped to undermine support for the Left.<<<

This is a very good point. Many people do not realize what was waiting on the fringes of our political landscape. Mr. Roosevelt guided us through this threat and maintained our capitalist economy--although a bit modified.
