but not disarmed, it seems, not even by a dead-serious threat of imminent attack.
True. But the stated policy of the Bush administration is regime change, not disarmament. As I have stated before, if this president wants war there will be war. Any other reason or rhyme matter very little. This is an executive branch acting with little checks or balances following the events of 9/11.
It takes no crystal ball to predict that if Saddam is permitted to survive with his weapons programs intact, he will once again portray himself as the great Arab victor, standing proud against the unavailing might of the Great Satan.
Once again, true. But it was the president's rush to judgment... actually, let me take a step back. The blueprint to invade Iraq was on his Oval office table (courtesy of the ideologic neocons) prior to 9/11, but Bush 2.0 was looking for the correct political cover to implement the war plans. This administration has put itself into this precarious situation from its own political machinations, and in the process, has mortgaged the credibility of the United States into the invasion of Iraq. This is a very risky strategy which carries great potential costs, but hey, this administration is really really far out to the right. |
