For those who don't believe in deflation.
Breaking down the components of September’s consumer price index, if it were not
for a handful of items that comprise a mere 7 per cent of the CPI:

9.5% auto insurance premiums
9.2% tobacco
9.0% hospital services
6.5% tuition

the US inflation rate would already be running below the one per cent level.

By contrast:

-21.0% personal computers
-8.0% software
-4.5% long-distance telephone charges
-9.0% toys
-2.3% utilities/fuels
-1.1% new cars
-3.2% used cars
-11.1% television sets
-6.0% VCRs
-6.0% audio equipment
-2.0% tools/hardware
-5.2% airfares
-2.1% sporting goods

a whole range of day to day products are already recording significant price deflation.
