I don't take the Bush folk seriously in their protestations that they wish to install democracy in Iraq because of their propensity to attack and leave and because the US has that history as well and because the most informed commentary suggests they will try to put some sort of sympathetic, perhaps military, dictatorship in place, perhaps under the guise of some voting process.

I actually agree with your statement that Bush is not particularly interested in installing democracy in Iraq but don't buy your reasons. The only place where Bush has allegedly "left" is Afghanistan. Anyone with even the most rudimentary knowledge of Afghanistan should conclude that democracy will require cultural changes that cannot take place in a few months. It is wishful thinking to conclude that Afghanistan is ready for democracy--though a valiant effort has been made. Whether it will be a success is another matter.

Bush may be convinced into installing democracy in Iraq because of several factors. First, it is something that can be done. There are no ethnic or cultural factors similar to those in Afghanistan that present insurmountable obstacles to Iraqi democracy. Secondly, post-invasion Iraq will present the US with a wonderful opportunity to create good will which it should not squander. Could be the beginning of real change in the ME.

Bush, in my view, has no principle-based commitment to the installation of democracy in Iraq, but he has good reasons to do so anyway.
