what LBJ later called a "Murder Inc." political strategy Nobody above the level of the Gestapo has to accept criticism from LBJ. His civil rights record, domestically and abroad, during the Vietnam War was sterling, wasn't it?
as well as the involvement in domestic politics, a violation in both Britain and the US. Pardon moi, but the largest part of the involvement of the CIA in domestic politics occurred while LBJ was in charge. And a plea that he knew nothing of it comes up against this: Is there anyone who honestly believes he would have done anything about it had he known? Those guys were working to put down those demonstrations that were destroying his Presidency.
Oh, that's civil rights as applied to his critics rather than his cynically chosen friends-of-the-moment.
And I find it rather hard to believe that the secret service of perfidious Albion has much room to criticize its sister services. They had their "wet operations" too. They have long had the advantage of the Official Secrets Act, though, which makes it more difficult and more dangerous to surface their escapades.
I'm sorry: I will not accept an argument that someone else's thugs are kinder than ours.
How about the epitome of civilization, France? Remember Rainbow Warrior?
But the millions of pages FOIA releases show CYA rather than need-to-know. But that's all they would show. The legitimate secrets still wouldn't see the light of day.
And the Patriot Act has got to go. If the USSC doesn't kill it, the excesses of government goons from ATF, FBI, Customs, CIA, etc., may. They may create such a stink around it that an outraged citizenry demands its repeal.
One can hope. |
