Hi CobaltBlue; Re: "Pakistani-Afghani marriages are famous for not working ..."

What languages did the children speak?

Back when the Solidarity folks had to escape with their lives from Poland, I met a very patriotic Polish man. He was sad that he had had to move to the US, but he expected that his children would be raised in the old way, along with their children, etc. I laughed out loud, and told him that if he stayed in the US, (especially outside the Polish neighborhoods) it was highly doubtful that his grandkids would speak a single word of Polish.

The reason our culture does this is partly because we are so inclusive. In places where merely speaking the language doesn't make you a local, the foreign elements can remain insular. Here, the temptation to take advantage of the opportunities, or even to hide in the melting pot is impossible to resist.
