07-25-97 : Samsung Launches New DVD Player for International Mart

Samsung Electronics has brought out a new, multi-format DVD player targeted for the international market. The new model DVD-905 is adaptable to both the NTSC broadcasting format used in the United States and the PAL format used in Europe. It is the first DVD player of its kind to hit the world market after a model put out by Panasonic.

Samsung introduced its first DVD player on the American market last November, almost at the same time as market leaders Toshiba and Matsushita. The new model has been improved by reducing the previous four chipsets to one and including a Dolby AC-3 decoder which means the player can be connected to an ordinary analog amplifier without the help of an AC-3 amp chip.

Up to now, DVD has been a little slow to take off because of a lack of software. To improve matters on the local market, Samsung Electronics in conjunction with Samsung Entertainment Group has made a commitment to activate DVD title development. Samsung is looking to begin exports of its DVD-905 model this month to France, Germany, the Netherlands, Australia and Singapore. The world DVD market is estimated to be worth around $60 billion by 2000.
