Hi Christine,

<<Several people on the Feelings thread have made it perfectly clear that they are not at all enveloped by any feelings of missing Johnny at all, and simply protested his ouster because of the principle of freedom of speech. Skipper and I seem to be the only ones who really miss him, and while I don't know exactly how Skipper feels, I only miss Johnny when he is being flawed and human and egalitarian and a little raw and rough and passionate.>>

This is how I feel:

I don't expect John to be allowed back on SI, because I think he was kicked off for being "vulgar"; it is to be expected that this is how he would be viewed, and I think it is well understood by all that he will not change. I do think that those who consider him vulgar should reconsider the meaning of the word. I don't hold any grudge that he has not been allowed back, and I am sure that neither does he. The use of this site is under the jurisdiction of its owners, and his banishment is not an issue of free speech.

I miss John because he has the rare ability to grasp fundamental truths, and the honesty to state them uncompromisingly. He's also funny. If he offends people, I think it's their problem. Here is what I think is a prime example of his clarity of thought:

exchange2000.com

I do think that if people were more aware of the contents of Atlas Shrugged (in particular, the theme of non-contradiction) it might give perspective to some of his more objectionable posts. But then again, few here seem to care for the book either.

I am feeling a little exposed now, as I think you will understand. I have really wanted to discuss the topic of development vs. environment with you and Terrence, but have not had much time to write. Next time.

Skipper
