David Horowitz is the President of the Center for the Study of Popular Culture. A best-selling author and editor, Horowitz may be best known for his lifelong intellectual and political journey from a radical activist in the '60s to a crusader against the corrosive effects of '60s leftism on modern American culture.
Horowitz earned a Bachelor's degree from Columbia University in 1959 and a Master's degree from the University of California at Berkeley in 1961. He quickly became a leader of the New Left. During the Sixties, he edited Ramparts magazine, an influential left-wing journal.
In the 1970s, dissatisfied with the tragic consequences of radical policies in America and abroad, Horowitz withdrew from politics. He and his partner Peter Collier then co-authored a series of best-selling biographies of prominent American families: The Rockefellers: An American Dynasty (1976), The Kennedys: An American Drama (1985), The Fords: An American Epic (1987), The Roosevelts: An American Saga (1994). In 1978 Horowitz was honored with a Guggenheim Fellowship, and in 1990 he received the Teach Freedom Award from former President Ronald Reagan.
During the Eighties, Horowitz's second thoughts about politics crystallized. In their 1989 book Destructive Generation: Second Thoughts About the Sixties, Horowitz and Collier chronicled the legacy of the New Left and its effects on American politics and culture.
Horowitz's political journey is recounted in his autobiography, Radical Son, which was published by the Free Press in February 1997. Author George Gilder has called Radical Son "the first great American autobiography of his generation." Horowitz went on to publish The Politics of Bad Faith in 1998; Hating Whitey and Other Progressive Causes in 1999, and, in 2000, The Art of Political War, which Bush chief campaign strategist Karl Rove called a "must read."
In 1988, Horowitz created the Center for the Study of Popular Culture. The Center boasts 20,000-plus members and publishes four magazines, including Frontpagemag.com and Heterodoxy, a monthly focusing on "political correctness and other follies."
One of Horowitz's current concerns is bringing new voices to Hollywood. In 1996, he and the Center held the first annual "Images of Ourselves" Conference at Paramount Studios. Appearing were Senator Sam Nunn and William Bennett. In 1997 at Walt Disney Studios, Senators John McCain and Fred Thompson were brought together with Sky Dayton, Founder of the "Earthlink Network," along with the best and brightest in the Hollywood industry to discuss the future of online entertainment. In the words of Los Angeles Magazine, holding this forum "would have been unthinkable several years ago." From the spirit of this came the Wednesday Morning Club, which has brought then-Gov. George W. Bush, former White House Chief of Staff Leon Panetta, Chris Matthews (MSNBC's "Hardball"), and other political and media celebrities to Hollywood to communicate and work with industry leaders.
David Horowitz has spoken at over 100 colleges and universities. He has appeared on Nightline, Crossfire, Today, Good Morning America, C-SPAN, CNBC, FoxNews Channel and CBS This Morning, and gives hundreds of interviews yearly on radio and television.
