Jim, if I accused you of being a murderer, and you knew you were not, would you feel comfortable with me administering a lie detector test to you? I wouldn't think so. That's why a national expert was called in instead. Professor Van de Velde passed two tests, not one.

Lest you decide to still take the side of the police and conclude that Van de Velde must have something to hide, recall that Van de Velde actually consented to a lie detector test administered by the police when they asked him in the days right after the murder. The police for whatever reason did not take him up on his offer.

I'm curious why you might think someone for whom no evidence was ever found to link to a crime should be given a lie detector test in the first place. If someone you knew was murdered and you were asked to asked to take a lie detector test, would you consent? Keep in mind that while you might know you had nothing to do with the crime, it doesn't guarantee that both the machine and the person interpreting the results will be 100% accurate. If there's no evidence linking you to the crime, why take the risk the test results themselves might make you a suspect, get your name in the paper, get you fired from your job, etc.? And if you do pass it, what about those people who will undoubtedly say that smart people like you know how to beat lie detectors tests but you don't fool them because they just "know" you are guilty?
