I'm pretty sure, that Lott was just trying to heap praise on Thurmond and his public service - he went a overboard, and made a fool of himself. I believe that Lott claimed that he voted for Strom Thurmond for President (in 1948). I'm pretty sure that Lott never voted for Strom Thurmond during his Presidential run. Maybe Lott can claim that he didn't even realize what voting for Thurmond meant in 1948 (2 reasons: 1. Before the 70's, almost every white Democrat running for National or Statewide office in the South probably ran as a segrationist. 2. He can claim that he really didn't know what voting for Strom Thurmond meant in 1948, because he was 7 at the time).
