I would know what the shorts' reasons were because Pluvia, the head short on TERN, stated them here. I would know approximately how long he held because I read on another thread his after the fact admission that he'd gotten out of TERN long ago(written prior to TERN crossing 30 or so, as I recall). More to the point, who said anything about making money not being the ONLY reason to invest? Certainly not me! I can't imagine what statement I've made that would lead you to begin to imagine otherwise, as I'm confident I've made no such statement. If you think I've stated otherwise, point it out. If understanding a business helps make money by guiding investment decisions(surely), then understanding when shorts have lied about a business, and where they have offered invalid reasons for their advice surely is pertinent(same goes for longs, of course).
