When the author asks "What is the evil?", he is asking for a concise definition of what we are fighting, so that it will not be possible for Russians, for example, to say Chechens long fighting for their independence are part of the enemy.

I don't think the can spend it's time concerning itself about the Russian's and the Chechen problem. Much of the Chechen struggle is religious, with the rest being economic (oil refineries built by the Soviets) and nationalism.

I think the author should tell us whether every entity claiming right to national status, should be granted a chunk of geography out the country they currently live in?

The Turks certainly don't favor such a goal since it would set the precedent for having to sacrifice land for a Kurdish state..

As for whether the current method is "optimal", I don't believe he's offering anymore than a "vision" without implementation. And I think it's a poor excuse aimed at protecting European interests in the region which are threatened to be subordinated to the US cause.

I believe US leaders know exactly where the "evil" lies. Some refuse to acknowledge it publicly, either out of strategic or political reasons... No one in the US wants to just come out and say the Saudi regime is responsible for has developed, but everyone I've talked to (who would be knowlegable on the topic) recognizes the complicity of the Saudis.

Thus, Iraq is only a stepping stone to Saudi Arabia. But we don't want to rile the "snake" too much before we're close enough to chop it's head off (or put it in a cage).
