I believe that in modern science, the word "theory" has replaced the word "law". A scientific theory, (as I understand it) has been repeatedly tested. For instance, the principles that engineers used to design the computer you use are most likely "theories" and not "laws". I never really researched it, but the term "scientific law" is probably an 18th or 19th Century concept.
