That makes two of us.

One would think that if he were alive, some photographic evidence incontestably establishing that he survived Afghanistan would have come to the forefront in order to rally the troops, support morale, inflame the Arab street, etc.

That nothing incontestable has been seen seals the point, in my view.

I agree completely with your point about Saddam. He is infinitely a greater threat than AQ. Plus, we're pursuing both, so why does the notion exist that to pursue one is to ignore the other? Makes no sense to me, but it does make for political hay, which I guess is the point.
