On 911 we had more pressing issues to deal with than debating the budget and many others. That is certainly no excuse to dismiss these issues. The statement is apparently ridiculous to you, but the issue is is it ridiculous to Trent Lott. I am not convinced that it is, despite his belated and half-hearted apology. When one gives statements in support of racists with Lott's obvious sincerity before the CCC and at Thurmond's birthday celebration, one must retract those statements with a degree of sincerity sufficient to counterbalance and overwhelm the formerly expressed sincerity. That simply did not occur.

The "apology" was no doubt sufficient to release political pressure in the meantime, but I suspect the damage yet lingers. Gore certainly was able to exploit it. We will see how it goes in the future.
