"Estrogenic compounds", i.e. chemicals which act as biologic analogues to female hormones such as estrogen and progestrogen ARE building up in the environment in higher and higher levels.

They are in the water most people drink, present in excessive amounts in many commercial products such as hair conditioners, lotions, etc., oft times in combination with other substances which increase their absorption through the skin.

Many commonly used herbicides contain high levels of such "estrogenic compounds" - often byproducts of the manufacturing process such as atrazine (currently under E.P.A. review for exactly this problem... but a major ingredient in 'Roundup') and are blamed for the buildup in environment.

Scientists believe that the Worldwide fall-off in male sperm production levels in the 20th. century (and possibly other effects, such as sex reversal in frogs, etc.) may be traced to the chemical pollution of such estrogenic compounds.
