<<...The two questions that should be paramount at this time are "What are the alternatives to war" and "What will the results of war be". Mr. Mearsheimer and Mr. Walt have offered a credible premise of containment as an alternative to war with Iraq.

There are several reasons and rationales being promoted as to why the war must happen. However, there is a distinct lack of what will be done to replace Saddam's government once he is ousted. The US claims it does not want to participate in Nation Building, and the lack of support in Afghanistan to stabilize the situation there shows a likely scenario for Iraq.

The question of the likely results of war? Inevitably it will lead to further perceptions that the US is bent on attacking Muslims and Islam in general. The radical minority will grow, and moderates in Islamic nations will have a harder time in controlling these elements. The likely net result is a widening of the terror networks and further attacks on the west - not less.

Longer term, the threat of violence will not work (as seen in Palestine) against populations that feel they have nothing left to lose. Credible force must be maintained to threaten regimes such as Saddam's, but the best approach to solving this problem would be a unified approach to the promotion (and perhaps enforcement) of basic human rights. Help develop education within Islamic nations, economic alternatives, freedom of speech, etc., and this will lead to a more natural and evolutionary representative governments. An educated and increasingly affluent population will see the negative effects of autocratic regimes, and will work to change them from within. However, even the most democratic and open-minded individuals of any nation would resist against foreign aggressors coming in to dictate through armed force how they should govern themselves. Especially if the foreign aggressor is the same hypocritical nation that has supported and promoted the autocratic rule throughout the region...>>
