In each of his novels Robert Heinlein made a lot of observations about the future. He had characters answering telephones while out in the desert on horseback - 60 years ago.
In Friday Mr. Heinlein made several observations about the symptoms demonstrated by sick or dying cultures. In addition to violence, muggings, sniping, arson, bombing, terrorism and riots he added one more symptom that is invariably present, here is what he wrote...

<< Bad manners. Lack of consideration for others in minor matters. A loss of politeness, of gentle manners, is more significant than is a riot...This symptom is especially serious in that an individual displaying it never thinks of it as a sign of ill health but as proof of his/her strength.>>
