STXN introduces radios for the 2.4 and 5.8 GHz unlicensed bands.
This is cool.. but the new "Unity" radio platform that STXN is coming out with next year will be even cooler. As its name suggests, "Unity" will unify their entire portfolio of products for the licensed bands. I expect Unity to reduce their manufacturing costs while providing greater compatibility/interoperability among their products. In the interim, these new products for the unlicensed bands will help grow their customer base (and revenue) while providing an "upgrade" path for customers who later want to move to using licensed bands.
Rob ================================================== Stratex Networks Broadens Product Portfolio with Addition of License-Exempt Radios
Stratex Networks Now Offers the Most Complete Portfolio of Licensed And License-Exempt Microwave Radios
SAN JOSE, Calif., Dec. 11 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Stratex Networks, Inc. (Nasdaq: STXN), one of the world's foremost wireless transmission solutions providers for mobile and broadband wireless access networks, today announced the immediate availability of a radio frequency license-exempt digital radio platform. Complementing Stratex Networks' current product portfolio, the Velox LE(TM) will provide flexibility of using both licensed and unlicensed products in planning and implementing customers' networks.
"As part of our ongoing commitment to reduce customers' costs, we are now adding a license-exempt solution to our broad wireless transmission product line," said Charles D. Kissner, chairman and chief executive officer of Stratex Networks. "The addition of the Velox LE product line allows us to reduce recurring costs in some countries where our customers face high licensing fees. In many cases, this also allows for quicker startup of networks where licensing procedures are slower and therefore time to revenue is longer."
The Velox LE is available in 2.4 and 5.8 GHz license-exempt bands and provides up to 4xE1 or 4xT1 capacity as well as a 10 Base-T bridged Ethernet port supporting up to 8 Mbps continuous throughput. Velox LE offers the ability to upgrade capacity through software, drastically reducing the number of hardware options required. This full-featured system also contains a frequency spectrum analyzer providing the ability to identify the existence of frequency interference. During installation, if co-channel interference is detected, the installer can simply program the radio to a clearer frequency without upgrading hardware or changing diplexers. With rapidly increasing use of these license-exempt bands this provides for better quality of service.
"The Velox LE radio can be easily and rapidly installed and configured to form point-to-point links, wireless Ethernet bridges or even video links," said Rob Vance, product manager for Stratex Networks. "It is a cost-effective alternative to leased lines and provides fast connectivity, while also ensuring the highest quality possible using license-exempt spectrum."
