John,

many many of my friends do not have computers. They all would like to buy one but feel they are too expensive. As prices come down the demand is still going to explode. The pc is still like the first tv in the neighborhood. I think we lose sight of this on si. companies like intel should have no problem growing for quite some time.

You and I are the same age more or less. I can remember the transition from radio to tv very well. It's true that as prices of tv came down demand grew enormously. The reason demand grew so much was only partly a function of the price of the set. It was more closely tied to the transcendance of the new cultural norm - watching television. Because demand for the ability to join the norm grew so much, manufacturers were able to build more efficient factories and cost shrank. And don't forget technological improvements like COLOR.
I liken what is about to happen in personal computers to the transition from b&w tv to color. Once color became the new paradigm, ultimately everybody had to get a new set. The same will be true with computers. The availability of new ways to communicate ideas and conduct business will drive this new cultural phenomenon until it too becomes the norm.

As prices go down and technology moves ahead, your many, many friends and even my wife will not separate culturally from the norm.

Stay tuned. The volume is going to go up soon.

Barry
