Tim will be missed by the Silicon Investor community. I know of no other person who was a more prolific poster. 34,443 posts. He was SI's first guru. . . well before the tech boom.

There is certainly a moral regarding how well we can know those we meet in cyberspace. Anthony: charged with multiple Federal crimes involving FBI agents in a complicated stock manipulation scheme. TokyoJoe (who likened the markets to the Wild West and the daytrader to a gunfighter) and Daniel: slapped on the hands by the SEC for selling into hype they created. Tim: reaching a point of desperation that led him to an unsuccessful attempt at an 'armed' robbery. . . reminiscent of suicide attempts we have seen on the news.

The fake gun makes a powerful statement of desperation. Real guns are cheap and easy to come by, so if he was willing to kill others for his cause, he would have brought a real gun. But he was not willing to kill. This desperate act implied a point-of-no-return. He knew full well that if he was unsuccessful, he could lose his life. But he also likely figured that by bringing a fake gun, nobody could get hurt but himself.

Then you have to ask yourself whether he even intended upon being successful at all. The report said, "when he dropped his guard, the owner was able to secure his own weapon and thereupon shot the suspect". Why drop his guard? Or did he do so purposely? Everyone knows that a Beverly Hills area jeweler is fully armed. . . and likely has a security guard watching from behind a glass somewhere as well. There is little chance of completing a successful robbery of a hardened LA jeweler. My guess is that he also understood this. . . making this act suicidal by nature.

I recall Tim Luke's previous name on Silicon Investor was "Outlaw Josie Wales". The Outlaw Josie Wales was a man of peace who, after losing his humanity (and family), turned into a gunfighter. Without delving into a psychological narrative. . . suffice it to say that the parallel is staggering. Even this thread is named after a Clint Eastwood Wild West gunfighter movie.

Outlaw Tim Luke, here's to riding off into the sunset.

May God have mercy on your soul.
