Pardon me if my ignorance shows. Your statement seems to suggest that money spent on defense would be wasted. How could that be the case?

Surely, money spent on defense goes back into the economy in the sense that materials and materiel have to be purchased, and people have to be hired to perform various tasks. And then there will be profitable armament sales abroad. Also employment puts money into the pockets of employees who will spend them. Surely, all this contributes towards an active or vibrant economy, does it not? How then is the money 'wasted'?

Please enlighten me.
