Traders face new risk: injury from falling asleep at terminals

SINGAPORE - In recent months, it has been deflation, the likelihood of an Iraq war and the threat of a double-dip US recession that have posed the main risks for traders in the local stock market. Although these risks undoubtedly remain, they appear to have taken a back seat for the time being.

Instead, the most serious threat that local dealers face today is the risk of falling asleep during trading hours, thus injuring their heads on their terminals - such is the level of interest in stocks that dozing off every now and again has become a very real possibility.

Anectodal testimony from dealers is that the sound of phones ringing in dealing rooms has in the past few days been replaced by fairly regular thumps of heads hitting keyboards or desks as dealers nod off unwittingly amid some of the most mind-numbingly boring sessions in recent memory.
