Right. That makes it all better. It was a 'reasonable explanation'.

But, distilling plain truth from his plain words, what he said was: America would be better off if the Dixiecrat segregationists had won the Presidency... and then he said he was 'proud' his State had voted for them in the Electoral College (leaving out the salient fact that Blacks couldn't vote in his State in that election).

And he has said nearly the exact same words before in public....

Which leads many to believe he only spoke what was in his heart, and that he is down deep, an unreconstructed segregationist.

Why apologize for speaking his true mind? (Only because the winds of political expediency were howling, that's why.)

If Lott thinks that America would be better off to have continued it's embrace of segregation, Jim Crow laws and poll taxes and lynchings... then I have very BIG problems with him.
