Analysts are in frequent contact with the companies that they cover.
One of the problems with Macromedia has been that they have been less than forthright regarding earnings estimates .

If memory serves, the long slide of the stock price started two quarters ago when earnings fell below expectations. Prior to that earnings statement, analysts were recommending the purchase of the stock. Neither analysts, nor investors like to be led astray by
management. I believe that there is a period just prior to the release of earnings during which companies are prohibited from commenting on analyst's estimates.
First Call (available on AOL) is a good place to check earning estimates in the street.
Hope this answers your question.
