"I would not be surprised at all if there were closet segregationists among the Democrats......."

You would be correct....the race issue is still a very prominent one in this country.... I still feel that given a very honest vote on the issue, a vote for segregation would probably still carry the nation, regardless of party. If we all were really honest about our neighbors, friends, family, and even ourselves, we'd agree.

The Deep South became solidly democratic after the Civil War because Lincoln was a Republican and the south was pissed....After the Civil Acts Act of 64 due to the Democrats, the shift started toward the conversion to the GOP again because the south was pissed ....race is still a very big issue in the culture of the south and not too much different in the north, except it is less obvious on the surface. It is here, however, and still very deep. Housing patterns, school populations, political representation and voting, employment patterns, and social situations all provide such evidence. We all talk equality but that's a facade; the blacks know it and so do we if we're honest. It is an undeniable fact, that folks who are most strident on the issue are most likely, not always, but most likely republican because of the GOP is the party that still resists change in the status quo vis-a-vis segregation and equal opportunity. I expect screams of indignation over these comments, but perception is everything. The howls will come from the most predictable posters....
