You should drive through west Texas and see the miles and miles of wind farms. You should stop by the shop and see my 1950 GMC pickup (which is still undergoing restoration). It gets a whopping 15 miles per gallon and it's not even some kind of monster truck. The Toyota that I drive over to see it gets two or three times the mileage. Those differences didn't occur because of the goodwill of the energy companies.

The primary benefit that allows the rich to become rich in the United States is a predictable and consistent set of laws and regulations. Much of this is the legacy of Republican Teddy Roosevelt who recognised that Trusts would lead not to prosperity, but to an oligarchy.

the govt doesnt protect private rights
they protect their own existence
Private Companies don't protect private rights either, except for those of the CEO and Directors in a postion to actually know what is going on and where the money flows in and out. That doesn't mean that the government is the best choice for everything, but it's not the worst either. At least there is some accountability in elections. The best job of the government is to ensure that private companies can compete, while the best job of the companies is to look for that competative advantage. Problems arise when those functions are out of balance.
