I don't know, I used that as an example of environmentalist pressures leading to changes which I think are better than just drilling for ever decreasing oil deposits. I'm even more of a fan of offshore windfarms.

The ebb and flow of development is an asymetrical operation. It is much easier and cheaper to wreck an area than to fix it back up. Abandoned resource facilities do not revert back easily to either their former state or to any state that humans tend to find pleasant. Whether it be mines, wells, dumps, or roads there is profit to be made while building and running these facilities and none when the resource runs out or suffers from a price decline.

Given this asymetrical behavior it is only prudent to be very cautious about these ventures. This, after all, is our property. In most cases in the past a private company extracts the resource, earns the profit and spins off a subsidiary which then goes bankrupt leaving the public with much less than it had before. The oil in Alaska will be there in a hundred years if necessary, there is no reason to panic deal with a shortage that will have to be dealt with someday anyway.

American companies face economic disaster if they ignore this trend or assume they can lobby it away.
