It certainly did, in spite of great wealth, power, and aggressive Cold Warriors like LeMay, who pushed for preemtive nuclear attack of the USSR after WWII. If civilian leadership had acquiesced to preemptive killing of millions of Russians, do you think the US would still have that humanitarian standard?

That respect and credibility is fast disappearing under Bush, and if so all our unprecedented military and economic power will only serve as a detriment. We are targets of criticism quite naturally by self-interested warlords. If we do not reinforce our moral authority, that criticism turns into suicide bombers in our own country.

By financing and meddling in foreign blood feuds, we destroy our credibility. The only way to participate and maintain credibility, if the Executive Branch insists, is multilaterally under an organized set of rules. That's what the UN was intended to be.
