Not clear what you are saying with this: "No, literacy tests. Literacy tests, period. No poll taxes. Don't you know that conservatives oppose taxes?"

My point was to show that Cy - in a debate about Trent Lott pining for the 'good ole days' of segregation, and 'what a great America we'd have if a segregationist had won the Presidency (as if we never had any!) - called for literacy tests... dishonest use of which were at the heart of enforcing segregation in the South.

Perhaps Cy is not aware of the irony, perhaps he'd was unconscious of the fact that he had mirrored a decrepid piece of segregationist history, perhaps he means only *good* things and assumes that election officials are always fair, honest, and non-discriminatory.

... Or perhaps he is just unaware of the irony, and the history.

As far as 'conservatives always oppose taxes', they sure SUPPORTED them when poll taxes (and lynchings) served to keep poor Blacks from voting.

Again, one of the sad 'little ironies' of history.
