You bet he could have. That's why the Conservative party looks the way it does today. I took out a PC membership in '83. We had a local MP who looked to be in line for a cabinet spot, and our city hadn't had a rep. in cabinet for 20 years at that point. I signed up to make sure this chap beat back a very strong competitor for the nomination. I was as happy a camper as anyone in Canada on election night in '84. So it was a bit of a surprise to find nothing changing. Hell, I even got to be an "enemy of Canada" because I didn't toe Brian's line. That was a bit much, so me and 50,000 other members left the party. Of course they're the same as the other guys.

My worst [political] nightmare is just what you said -- that with enough time in Ottawa, the Alliance morphs into another status quo party. We laughed when Manning came up with the phrase "Ottawashed"; then it was time to cry, when he proved that knowing about it didn't immunize him. It's certainly happened to Deb Grey, which I wouldn't have thought possible when I sat across the table from her in 1989.

OTOH I found Steve Harper to be only older and wiser after his stint there, not Ottawashed at all. God willing he's resistant.
