WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. consumer optimism brightened in December, brushing back concerns about possible war with Iraq and rising jobless rates, and boosting hopes for a joyous holiday shopping season.


A series of private and government reports on Friday offered hints of better economic prospects ahead as wholesale prices remained well in check in November, and a closely watched gauge of consumer confidence moved higher this month.
