No, my AA comments reveal the effect they had on me, not on whether I agree with them or whether it's a good idea. Personally I think AA is probably a good thing, and the time may come when white males like myself need it. What would you say to that? Are you for it under those circumstances, or not?

Considering that my Dad was born and raised in the south, his background view that you can't leap from a condition where people still alive had been slaves to a condition of total color blindness was realism more than prejudice.

Dad left the South to be a roughneck in the oilfields and from there to join the Marine Corps. He never returned to the South, except when he was at Cherry Point.

He never told me I couldn't play with my best friend Roy Raymond, and he never told me I couldn't sleep in the same tent with him at Scout camp. When Roy's father got the garbage truck stuck on the railroad track and the train killed his brother Marvin, I saw the longest funeral procession of my young life, all composed of white people. The only blacks in the hearse and the limousine were Roy's family.

And by the way Roy's mother drove me to my first day of high school because I missed the bus and she saw me frantically trying to ride my bike into the school.

I've completely lost track of Roy and his family, but I treasure those memories among my finest.

What I hate is bigotry. There are many kinds of bigotry, but my father had none of it.
