The scuttlebutt is Baker and Cheney gave them the Warren Commission "lie for your country" routine and they feared for their own safety. IMO they both discovered it's a vicious Hot Potato -- asking the www.unansweredquestions.org type questions is a risk.

Trying to do another Warren Commission cover-up won't work in the Digital Age since there's enough evidence still loose to make trouble for everybody, and they'll lose either way.

Better to make excuses and bow out, quickly.

There are too many enemies to be made... Not the terrorists, no worries there -- the Saudis, Bushes, Israelis, any of which will happily ruin your life.
